AI Search Visibility for Small Business: Your Site Wins

On 20 August 2026, Reddit disappeared from ChatGPT's local recommendations. Not reduced. Gone. It fell from 41.7% of citations to 0.0% in a single re-measurement, and business websites took most of the space it left behind.

If you have spent two years being told your Google Business Profile and your reviews are the whole game in local search, treat this as the correction. AI search visibility for small business now runs through the one asset you own outright, which is your website.

This post covers what the citation data shows, why the same question gives you a different answer each time you ask it, and the seven things worth fixing on your site this month.

The short version: AI search visibility for small business comes down to your own website. Steady Demand's citation study found Google Gemini pulls just under 60% of its local citations from businesses' own sites, more than directories, review platforms and forums combined. After a change on 20 August 2026, ChatGPT's business-website share rose from 15.9% to 42.8% while its Reddit citations fell to zero.

Two terms worth defining

An AI citation is the source link an assistant shows to back up a recommendation. When Gemini says a business is worth calling and puts a link underneath, that link is the citation. It is the closest thing AI search has to a ranking position.

Grounding drift is the name Ben Fisher of Steady Demand gave to the wobble. Ask an assistant the same question twice and it reaches for a different set of sources. Same wording, same day, different answer.

What the citation data shows

Steady Demand ran 1,487 local queries through Gemini's API across 50 US metro areas and 10 service categories, then logged 14,472 citations (https://www.steadydemand.com/ai-citation-ledger/). Here is where Gemini went for its sources.

Reddit at 13.7% beat every local service directory put together, Angi and Thumbtack and HomeAdvisor included. Search Engine Land covered the study on 19 August 2026 (https://searchengineland.com/business-websites-gemini-citations-local-ai-search-study-485506).

Then ChatGPT moved. The same queries, re-measured on 20 August, produced a different picture, documented in the study's methodology notes (https://www.steadydemand.com/ai-citation-ledger-methodology/).

The trigger looks like ChatGPT's shift to site-scoped background searches around 8 August. Gemini was unaffected and held at 6.7% Reddit citations.

Fisher's read on it is plain. "Don't abandon on-site fundamentals. Clear service pages, real content, and a crawlable site structure are what gets cited most often when Gemini backs up its recommendations."

The consistency problem nobody warns you about

Read this bit before you go and check your own business.

Repeat an identical Gemini query and the cited sources overlap around 40% of the time. Gemini named the same top business on a repeat query around 7% of the time. Google's ordinary local pack, used as the control, held its top listing about 90% of the time.

Across platforms it gets stranger. Gemini and ChatGPT cited the same domains 8% of the time, and recommended the same top business 4.2% of the time, as MarTech reported on 20 August (https://martech.org/business-websites-dominate-geminis-local-ai-citations/).

One search is not a test. Winning in Gemini tells you nothing about ChatGPT. Checking once and celebrating is the same mistake as checking once and despairing.

Seven things to fix on your site this month

1. Give every service its own page. One page per service, named the way clients say it out loud, not the way you write it on an invoice.

2. Write a real About page. Who you are, where you work, what you are qualified in, who you help. Assistants lean on this page to describe you.

3. Answer the first-call questions in plain text. The things people ask before they book, answered on the page, in the words a person would use.

4. Say your locations out loud. City and region in the body copy, not hidden in the footer.

5. Keep the site readable by machines. No service copy trapped inside images, sliders or scripts a crawler cannot open.

6. Add Organization and FAQPage schema. It tells the machine what it is looking at.

7. Keep something moving. A stale site is a weaker source. One useful post a week is plenty.

None of this needs new software. It needs your website to say clearly what you do, where, and for whom.

What this study does not prove

- The 10 categories were trades and professional services: plumbing, roofing, HVAC, electrical, locksmith, pest control, house cleaning, personal injury law, dentistry and auto repair. No coaching, no therapy, no consulting.

- All 50 metros were American. New Zealand and Australian results were not measured.

- The data came from API calls, not the consumer apps your customers use. The researchers say so plainly, and call the work a snapshot rather than a long study.

- The business-website figure appears as 61.1%, 58.7% and 59.9% on different pages of the study, a gap picked apart by Digital Applied on 20 August 2026 (https://www.digitalapplied.com/blog/gemini-local-citations-grounding-drift-methodology-read).

- Steady Demand sells local SEO. Read the headline with that in mind.

The direction holds across two engines and two measurement dates. The decimals do not.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Google Business Profile still matter?

Yes. It feeds the map, the local pack and your reviews, and Google's own local results held their top listing about 90% of the time in this study. Treat the profile as the steady foundation and your website as the thing AI quotes.

Should I start posting on Reddit to get cited?

Not on the strength of one number. Reddit was 13.7% of Gemini's citations and zero of ChatGPT's after 20 August. A source able to fall to zero overnight is not a plan.

How often should I check whether AI recommends my business?

Monthly, across at least two assistants, with the same question worded three different ways. One check on one platform tells you close to nothing. Also, set up Google Analytics reporting to track how many AI referrals you get.

Do I need new software for this?

No. Clear service pages, an honest About page, a site a crawler cannot get stuck in, and content answering real client questions. The fundamentals did not change. The stakes did.

Key takeaways

- Your own website is the largest single source of local AI citations on both Gemini and ChatGPT.

- ChatGPT's Reddit citations went from 41.7% to 0.0% on 20 August 2026. Borrowed platforms move without telling you.

- The same query pulls different sources roughly 60% of the time, so check monthly across engines rather than once in a panic.

- Service pages, an About page and a crawlable site do more for AI search visibility than any tool you buy.

- The study is a US snapshot of trade categories, run by a local SEO agency. Sound direction, soft decimals.

If your website is doing none of the seven, start there before the next content plan or the next tool. I build sites on GoHighLevel for exactly this, and the Done & Dusted Content Machine keeps the blog, the service pages and the Google Business updates moving each week so there is always something current for an assistant to quote. If you would rather know where you stand first, an AI Audit is the smaller step.
